Blog#3: Inclusive Design

3. Choose one (or more) of your planned learning activities from your Blueprint and identify any barriers for student success. How can you alter or adjust your current plan to reduce those barriers?

For this analysis, I chose to reflect on the activity from my Blueprint, which calls for students to plan and prepare a meal of Chinese food. This experiential approach has numerous benefits, as discussed in my Learning Environment Reflection. However, particular barriers could arise for students, and these challenges need to be mitigated by foresight. Firstly, students may have allergies to some of the ingredients. Furthermore, some students may be differently-abled than others and need specific accommodations so that the activity is accessible to them. In addition, students may not have the financial backing from their parents if the activity requires a fee from each family. While students are cooking, it could be difficult to keep track of cooking certain items if the facilitator is busy helping other learners. Lastly, the learning activity may require additional time to discuss the history behind Chinese food so that the activity comes to a cohesive close.

Fortunately, I can adjust my current plan to accommodate potential obstacles during this learning activity. Firstly, students will need to answer a health form to ensure that none of the ingredients will cause an allergic reaction. With this information, I can create substitution ingredient lists or even alternative dishes so that every student can safely enjoy the process. Before the learning activity, I will meet with each student to see if there are any accommodations they need to complete the activity. Ideally, this program will be financed by the educational agency so that all families can participate. Furthermore, parents would be asked if they would like to volunteer as facilitators for the learning activity so that there are more helpers if numerous questions appear simultaneously. A lecture by a local Chinese food entrepreneur may help personalize the history and culture behind the activity the students completed. Some students may benefit through this experiential process of questioning the guest presenter because of their learning styles.

Hello Zhefu, I chose to answer the third question in Colin’s Post. My blueprint is for students, so I couldn’t agree more with what you said about the need to strengthen communication and make sure we take care of everyone’s psychological changes. Including your second paragraph that we should adjust our learning activities to meet the needs of our learners. This is a similar point to my second paragraph, so I agree with it. I like your blog. Thank you!
